All about the course

Join our beginner-friendly course designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of photography. Gain confidence with your camera and understand essential techniques to capture stunning images. A camera is all you need! Anything beyond a smartphone is enough, manual control would be really handy, and interchangeable lenses would be a definite bonus. No technical knowledge is required - if you already know some of the basics, great, but you can take this course without knowing which end of the camera to look through. Across the 6 weeks of the course we cover all the technical fundamentals, with an emphasis on exposure as it underpins so much of the craft side of taking photographs. Each week we also dive into the creative side of things, to make sure you don't just end up produce technically perfect but boring photos! You'll learn some powerful skills to help you see shots better, broaden your range of inspiration, and bring your ideas to life. Here's what we'll cover week by week: Week 1: Technical - The basics of exposure: the three controls that make up the exposure triangle, and how they're related, along with the creative effects they have on an image. Creative - Understanding what stories you want to tell with your camera. Week 2: Technical - How much light have we got to work with? Metering, exposure modes, and histograms. Creative - The basics of visual language - how you can employ very simple elements to get your ideas across. Week 3: Technical - Choosing the "Right" exposure, and Dynamic Range. Creative - The importance of your influences and inspiration. Week 4: Technical - Getting sharp images, focusing and depth of field. Creative - Finding your overall theme. Week 5: Technical - White Balance and Digital Workflow. Creative - Using a logbook to bring your creativity together. Week 6: Technical - Cameras and lenses. Creative - Reverse engineering images, and weaving together your creativity and your craft skill to create your dream images.
